What is a safety switch?
A safety switch (also known as a residual current device or RCD) is an electrical device that can detect electrical currents flowing through the body. They swing into action within 30 milliseconds – less than a human heart beat.

Safety switches are often confused with circuit breakers and that’s why it is important to understand the differences – Circuit breakers provide short circuit and over current protection such as when a power point is overloaded.
Circuit breakers do not act as a safety switch for personal protection against electric shock.
Safety switches monitor the flow of electricity through a circuit and detect a problem which may pose a risk to personal safety and turn the power off within 0.03 of a second.
Safety switches always have a test button and have 30ma written on them. They are also sometimes labelled with the words “safety switch“.
Power Point Safety Switches.
Power point safety switches replace an existing conventional power point.
They protect:
•extension cords and electrical appliances plugged into the power outlet
•some of the other electrical wiring and power points on the same circuit
